The addition of horn or hard wood prevents any damage that the string may cause over years of use. Also, the tips of a bow are the most vulnerable part of a wooden bow to incidental abuse such as sticking it into the ground, banging it into things, shutting the truck door on it, etc. The horn or hard wood not only adds a little more protection, but when carefully done adds to the overall beauty of the bow as well. With any bow that I make, Longevity and durability is always a primary focus, so the attention to this detail is simply unavoidable for me. It's just a small part of the overall formula that makes for a fine wooden bow.
