Attention to Detail

Here are a few pictures of bow tips, commonly referred to as "nocks".    As you can see...I like to add a hard, durable overlay to the bow tips.  Yew wood is not as hard as some of the other bow woods; over time, it can be dented by the pressure of the bow string when the bow is strung. The addition of horn or hard wood prevents any damage that the string may cause over years of use. Also, the tips of a bow are  the most vulnerable part of a wooden bow to incidental abuse such as sticking it into the ground, banging it into things, shutting the truck door on it, etc.   The horn or hard wood not only adds a little more protection, but when carefully done adds to the overall beauty of the bow as well.  With any bow that I make, Longevity and durability is always a primary focus, so the attention to this detail is simply unavoidable for me. It's just a small part of the overall formula that makes for a fine wooden bow. Cheers !

There's a lot of work going on in the shop this winter, and as you can see the beautiful staves on the floor...there is much more to come. If you are curious about my work...contact me and set up a time to come and have a look.
